Center for Quantum Leaps researchers awarded Department of Energy grant
A $760,000 grant will help WashU physicists use artificial intelligence to develop faster, more accurate quantum sensors for studying advanced materials.
Quantum technologies are rapidly emerging. Soon they will be critical to fundamental research in areas spanning physics, chemistry, materials, biology and medical sciences.
The Center for Quantum Leaps (CQL), is creating a field-changing program of research within Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. In collaboration with the McKelvey School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, our work will harness new quantum and advanced technologies to develop and customize breakthroughs in key areas.
Given WashU’s strengths in biology, and the biomedical and life sciences, including plant science, we are uniquely poised to foster new collaborations across three schools. These efforts will advance their respective research programs and bolster transformational technologies in the coming decades.
The Center for Quantum Leaps (CQL) is pleased to welcome Dr. Christopher M. Jones of Halliburton for a Quantum Industry Colloquium titled “Sensing the Unseen: Quantum-Enhanced Sensor Physics for the Subsurface.”
The subsurface holds critical resources for energy production, geothermal development, carbon storage, and critical minerals, but measuring these environments remains a significant challenge. In this talk, Dr. Christopher Jones will explore how quantum technologies can enhance subsurface sensing through improved sensitivity, signal detection, imaging, and data interpretation. Drawing on Halliburton’s research, he will discuss advances in optical, electromagnetic, magnetic, and quantum sensing, including efforts to translate laboratory innovations into rugged industrial systems. The colloquium will highlight the potential of quantum-enhanced sensing to advance scientific discovery, inform subsurface resource management, and foster collaboration between academia and industry.
The Center for Quantum Leaps invites faculty to a monthly meeting.
The Center for Quantum Leaps is a signature initiative of the Arts & Sciences strategic plan.
